Karabo Nemakonde is Head of AML MLCO at Betway Africa, a position she assumed in October 2025. Prior to this role, she served as Chief Compliance Officer at VALR, a cryptocurrency exchange, from September 2021 to October 2025, where she designed and implemented an AML/CFT control framework and directed customer due diligence, transaction monitoring, sanctions screening, and suspicious activity functions. She has spoken at fintech and regulatory compliance conferences, including the Blockchain Africa Conference 2025.

Before joining VALR, Nemakonde held compliance and quality assurance roles at Investec, where she served as Subject Matter Expert AML (QA) and later QA Team Lead overseeing the AML Quality Assurance program. Earlier in her career she held multiple roles at FNB South Africa from 2014, including Quality Assurance Analyst and QA Team Lead. Her stated areas of expertise include AML/CFT, fraud risk management, data protection, fintech licensing, and enterprise risk management. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Johannesburg and a Postgraduate Diploma (Honours) in Management from Regent Business School. Her professional certifications include a Certificate in Anti-Money Laundering from the International Compliance Association and a Specialist Certificate in Financial Crime Risk and New Technology (Fintech and RegTech), also from the International Compliance Association.
