Head of tokenisation
Mike Alonso is Head of Tokenisation at the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), a position he has held since October 2023. In this role he is focused on building next-generation financial market infrastructures and designing the future of digital money. Prior to assuming this title, he served as Principal Architect for CBDC and Payments at the BIS Innovation Hub from April 2021 to May 2024, where he was designing and developing digital money solutions. He has spoken publicly on the application of blockchain technology to humanitarian finance, including participation in a 2024 Point Zero Forum workshop on the creation of a UN Digital Wallet with embedded identity management for aid distribution to displaced persons and refugees.
Before joining the BIS, Alonso was Lead Solution Architect at ConsenSys from January 2019 to April 2021, where he led the design, development, and delivery of blockchain-based solutions across use cases including payment networks, decentralised identity, smart contract architecture, digital asset management, trade finance, and government applications. He also held a Lead Technical Project Manager role within ConsenSys's Energy group for six months in 2018. Earlier, he served as COO at Pactum IO, LLC from 2017 to 2018, overseeing development of a smart contract platform, and as an Acquisitions Officer in the US Air Force from 2011 to 2016. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Himalayan University, completed between 2018 and 2021.
